It’s that time of the year again… the brand-new iPhone 14 has been released, bringing us 4 new phones: The iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. But with this one looking similar to its previous model (iPhone 13), the real question is, what’s different about the new iPhone?
Crash Detection
A feature that has been introduced with the new iPhone is crash detection. Inside the iPhone 14 there are gyroscopes that are able to sense when the holder of the iPhone has been involved in crash on the road. Once this has been detected, the phone will give you a short amount of time to respond to it, and if there is no response then it will automatically contact emergency services. Hopefully something that’s never needed but an intelligent feature all the same!
“Always-on” Display
The new ‘always-on’ display feature of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max means when you lock your phone, a dimmed version of the screen still displays showing useful information such as the time and other widgets. This stops you from having to touch the phone to ‘wake it up’ and access this information. What’s more, to preserve battery when you don’t need this information, there are a number of ways to make the screen go completely black including:
- Put your iPhone face down or in your pocket or bag
- Turn on Sleep Focus or Low Power Mode

Dynamic Island
The notch on the iPhone (the black part at the top of the screen that houses the camera and cuts into the screen) has been around for what seems like forever now. It first appeared on the iPhone X back in 2017 and has been a controversial design for a lot of people ever since. Well, this notch is no more on the iPhone 14 Pro. Instead, a feature known as the Dynamic Island has taken its place. The Dynamic Island brings a newer and more attractive look to the iPhone, as well as additional features. For example, it can display the music you’re listening to, control phone calls, display the charging status of the phone, show when the phone is locked or not, and more.

Colours
We can’t talk about the new iPhone range and not mention the new colours. The iPhone 14 has introduced a brand new, very appealing Deep Purple. This new colour is only available with the Pro versions of the iPhone, along with Space Black, Gold and Silver. The original iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus come in 5 different colours – Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight as well as previously seen (PRODUCT) Red which contributes to the Global Fund’s support of AIDS programmes and COVID‑19 Response.

Action Mode
And lastly, a new camera mode has been added alongside Cinematic, Slo-Mo and Time-Lapse for all of you content creators out there. Action mode is a new camera mode that allows you to capture action shots to the best quality yet. This mode works best outside in the daylight as it needs light to be able to function properly. The image of action mode is cropped in and the sensor in the camera allows it to capture the best quality in stabilising the image, whilst on the move. This is a great mode for capturing scenes such as people running or sports games, and could prove useful for Marketers or Events Managers to create high quality content.

So, although the iPhone 14 does still look very similar to the iPhone 13, if not the same, there are a number of interesting new features to get excited about.
